Why do certain docks hold crappie year after year while identical-looking ones stay empty?

The differences that matter are underwater. A productive crappie dock combines deep water access (the end sitting in 2.5 m / 8 ft or more, or close to a channel), broad shade from a wide deck or moored pontoon, and — the biggest multiplier — sunken brush or crib material underneath, often planted by the dock owner. A dock missing those pieces is furniture, not habitat. Fidelity follows: fish return to the good dock every year on schedule, so a milk run of a dozen proven docks beats blind-casting a hundred.
