What decides the exact depth a school suspends at?

Three layered gradients: temperature, oxygen, and food. Temperature and oxygen set the livable band — in summer that is the zone just above the thermocline, in winter the basin water that still holds oxygen — and within that band the school parks at whatever level the zooplankton and minnow layers are riding, which itself shifts with light through the day. The result is a depth that is precise to well under a meter but drifts by hours and seasons. This is why crappie anglers obsess over sonar depth marks: location can be approximate, depth cannot.
