How does a crappie school move through a single day?

The daily rhythm is a light-driven loop. In low light — dawn, dusk, night — the school lifts higher in the column and slides toward edges and flats to feed, following zooplankton's upward migration. Under a bright midday sun it drops deeper, packs tighter, and pulls into shade or the darker side of structure. Position changes are usually vertical first and horizontal second: the school may only travel 50–100 m (164–328 ft) (55–110 yd) all day, but its depth can swing 2–4 m (7–13 ft). If your morning spot dies at noon, try deeper and tighter before you try farther.
