How do river walleye differ from lake walleye?

Current replaces light as the chief organizer. River walleye live their lives in current seams — behind wing dams and boulders, in eddies below rapids and dams, along the soft inside of bends — holding in slack water and letting the flow deliver food, typically shallower than their lake cousins and less strictly nocturnal, since stained moving water keeps light comfortable all day. They still migrate, hard: upriver to spawning rapids and tailraces in spring (dams concentrate them famously), downstream to wintering holes — deep, slow pools where hundreds of fish stack — in late fall. The tactical shift is that depth control becomes current control: the jig weight that ticks bottom naturally through the seam is the single most important choice you make on a river.
