What are the basics of ice fishing for trout?

Counterintuitive rule number one: fish shallow. Under ice the whole lake is trout temperature, so lake trout roam 5–20 m (16–66 ft) structure — points, humps, reef edges — and stocked rainbows and brookies cruise 1–5 m (3–16 ft) along shorelines, often within a rod's length of bottom ice. For lakers, fish aggressively: rip white tube jigs and heavy spoons with big lifts, because winter lakers are active predators that respond to commotion, and drill many holes rather than waiting one out. For rainbows and brook trout, finesse: small jigs tipped with waxworms or artificials, tiny spoons, subtle shakes, and dead-stick pauses. Everywhere, first ice and last ice fish best — and every ice trip starts with checking thickness and local ice-safety guidance, and season dates, before tactics matter at all.
