Is casting shallow at night for walleye really a thing?
It is arguably the most underused big-fish technique in walleye fishing. After dark — especially in clear lakes where the day bite is weak, and hardest of all in late fall — large walleye push onto shallow rock, gravel points, and shorelines in 1–3 m (3.3–10 ft) to run down baitfish, and a wading or drifting caster can reach fish no daytime troller ever touches. The program is simplicity itself: a slow-swimming minnowbait or paddletail retrieved dead-straight and painfully slow, just fast enough to feel the wobble, over spots you scouted in daylight. Stealth is the skill — quiet feet, no unnecessary lights, long casts. The hours are unsociable and the count is low, but season after season this niche produces outsized shares of true trophies for the few who work it.
