Why do people say a thermometer is the most important trout tackle?

Because temperature answers the three questions that decide a trout day: where are the fish, will they feed, and is it ethical to fish at all. A stream reading tells you whether you are in the feeding band — roughly 10–18 °C (50–64 °F) is game-on for rainbows and brookies — or whether to go find a spring seep or tributary mouth a few degrees colder. On lakes, a temperature profile locates the lake trout stratum more reliably than any rumor. And the same instrument enforces the conservation line: at 20 °C (68 °F) it tells you to stop. No lure choice, rod, or fly box changes outcomes as much as being in the right temperature — a $10 thermometer outranks a $1000 setup used in the wrong water.
