How do I catch lake trout in summer without special gear — and with it?

The problem is purely depth: summer lakers sit at 20–30 m (66–98 ft), below casting range. The dedicated solution is downrigger trolling — a weighted cable carries your spoon or swimbait to an exact depth, you troll the cold band at 2–4 km/h (1.2–2.5 mph), and follow the bait marks on sonar. The budget solution is better than most anglers expect: vertical jigging. Drift over structure marking bait and fish, drop a 20–60 g (3/4–2 oz) jigging spoon, tube jig, or blade bait to bottom, and work it with lifts, flutters, and periodic bottom-pounds — a technique that outfishes trolling whenever fish are concentrated. No boat at all? Fish the calendar instead: ice-out and late fall put lakers within casting reach of shore.
