Do stream trout really stay in the same spot all season?
To a remarkable degree, yes. Tagging and mark-recapture studies show resident stream trout holding a home range often shorter than 50–100 m (165–330 ft) of channel for an entire season, anchored to one feeding lie — a specific seam or cushion where drifting food concentrates and holding cost is low. Fish caught and released are routinely recaptured within meters of the original spot weeks later. The fidelity breaks for defined reasons: spawning migrations (sometimes many kilometers/miles), summer heat forcing a retreat to cold refuges, and winter moves into deep slow pools. Practical upshot: the good lie that produced in June will hold a trout in September — maybe the same trout, or its replacement.
