Deadstick or jigging — which cadence actually catches perch?

Both, in sequence — they do different jobs. Jigging is the loudspeaker: lifts and bottom-thumps broadcast displacement the lateral line reads from meters away and pull the school in. The deadstick is the closer: perch inspect at half a meter (a foot or two) and commit to things that hold still, which is why the bite so often comes on the pause or on the motionless second rod. The classic ice setup — one rod jigging, one deadstick minnow beside it — is really one machine: the jig calls, the quiet bait converts. If you fish only one rod, build the pause into your cadence and treat it as the strike window.
