A muskie just ate boat-side in the figure-8 — now what?
Do not rear back over your shoulder — at half a rod-length of line there is no stretch and no room, and a violent vertical set pulls the bait straight out of the mouth. Sweep hard sideways, low, away from the direction the fish is facing, and keep the rod loaded while the fish thrashes; let the reel's drag and your bent rod do the shock absorption. Expect chaos: a boat-side fish instantly runs under the hull or wraps the motor, so be ready to plunge the rod tip deep. Loosen your drag a click before the eight starts — smart anglers set it lighter for the boat-side game than for mid-cast hooksets.
