How does a yellow perch fight once hooked, and how do I land the jumbos?

Modestly, and straight down. A hooked perch does not run, jump, or dive for cover; its whole fight is a fast, throbbing head shake and a few short dives under the rod tip — though a true jumbo pulls surprisingly hard on light tackle. The losses come from the tackle, not the fish: small hooks sit lightly in the lip, so a pause or slack line on the long lift from deep water lets the fish shake free, and swinging a heavy perch aboard on 1–2 kg (2–4 lb) line is where most jumbos drop off. Reel steadily, keep the rod bent, lift smoothly, and slide a small net under any fish you would hate to lose. One more trick: a hooked perch draws its schoolmates, so leaving it in the water a few seconds helps hold the school.
