When exactly should I swing?

When information becomes weight. The tap phase is inspection; the moment to lift is when the rod tip loads — steady heaviness, a slow pull-down, or the line moving off sideways — because that is the fish turning away with the bait actually inside. And "swing" is the wrong word: with #6–#8 hooks and 2–4 lb (1–2 kg) line, a firm, smooth lift of the rod sets steel; a bass-style snap tears small mouths and breaks light line. If repeated waiting still produces stolen bait, the answer is not a faster swing but a smaller hook, a shorter bait, or a stinger — make the commitment easier instead of trying to outdraw the peck.
