Why a sweep set instead of a bass-style hookset?

The membrane around a crappie's jaws is famously thin — "papermouth" is the fish's oldest nickname — and a violent snap either rips the hook straight through it or leaves it pinned in a flap that tears free mid-fight. The mechanics that land crappie are the opposite of largemouth fishing: a smooth sideways sweep to seat the hook, a soft rod tip and light drag to cushion every surge, steady pressure with no pumping, and a net for anything worth keeping instead of swinging it over the gunwale.
