What does a year of trout fishing look like at northern latitudes?

Take 45–50°N — Ontario cottage country — as the template, and shift every date later going north, earlier going south. January–March: ice season; lake trout on structure, stocked rainbows shallow (where seasons are open — many lake trout seasons close in late winter to protect pre-spawn fish). April: ice-out — lakers shallow from shore, the year's sleeper opportunity. April–May: rainbow runs in tributaries. May–June: prime everything — streams in the feeding band, lakers still reachable at 10–20 m (33–66 ft). July–August: lakers deep at 20–30 m (66–98 ft); stream fishing shrinks to cold mornings under the 20 °C (68 °F) rule. September: relief — trout respread, big-meal season. October–November: fall spawns; feeding is hot but closures multiply, so this is the read-the-regulations season. December: first ice returns. The calendar is really a temperature schedule wearing months as a costume.
