Why do trout anglers insist on barbless hooks and wet hands?

Because trout are physically fragile in ways bass are not, and both practices attack real mortality sources. Trout skin has a thin, easily damaged mucus layer over small scales; dry hands, dry nets, and grass strip that barrier and open the fish to fungal infection that kills weeks later — so wet hands, rubber nets, and keeping fish in the water are not fussiness, they are wound care. Barbless hooks cut handling time dramatically (often to zero, unhooked in the net) and turn deep-hook events from surgery into a flick. Both matter most exactly when trout are already stressed: warm water, long fights, air exposure. The compounding rule: barbless + wet + fast + in-water release stacks the survival odds; each shortcut you skip subtracts from them.
