Should I keep trout or release them?

The honest answer is "it depends on which fishery you are standing in," because trout fisheries are engineered differently. Put-and-take stocked ponds and streams exist for harvest — those rainbows were raised to be eaten, many cannot survive summer anyway, and keeping a legal limit is the program working as designed. Wild native fisheries sit at the other pole: a wild brook trout population in a small headwater is a slow-growing, easily depleted treasure, and most serious anglers release them all, or keep only an occasional small fish where regulations invite it. Lake trout deserve the strictest personal rule of all — a 10 kg (22 lb) laker at 50°N can be 30–40 years old and irreplaceable on any human timescale, so keep a modest eating-size fish if you wish, and release the giants. Between the poles, let two questions decide: can this population replace this fish quickly, and does the regulation reflect that?
