When should I book a trophy muskie trip, by region?
Two windows dominate everywhere; latitude just moves the dates. Early season — two to six weeks after the local opener, when recovered post-spawn fish feed shallow — means mid-June to July in Ontario and the upper Midwest. The heavyweight window is fall: late September through October on the Canadian Shield, October into November for Wisconsin and Minnesota, and November into early December on the giant-fish factories — Green Bay, Lake St. Clair, the St. Lawrence — where the year's biggest fish are caught in the year's worst weather. Skip the dog days: on many waters the 26–27 °C (79–81 °F) stretch of mid-summer is an ethical closure in all but name.
