Does catching a bed-guarding male doom the nest?

Honest answer: it creates real risk, and the size of the risk depends on the water. Studies show nest predators move in fast while the male is gone — in round-goby waters the raid starts within seconds, and even brief removals measurably cost eggs and fry; repeated catches or long fights can push a male to abandon entirely. In waters with few nest predators, a quickly-released male often returns and resumes guarding successfully. If you fish beds where it is legal, minimize the harm: land the fish fast, keep it in the water, release it on the spot within seconds — and check regulations first, since many smallmouth jurisdictions close the season for exactly this reason.
