Why do crappie nest in colonies instead of spreading out like bass?

Crappie spawn colonially: dozens of males fan nests within a small area, often spaced only 1–2 m (3–7 ft) apart, where a largemouth would demand many times that spacing. The colony works as shared defense — many guarding males overwhelm egg predators that would strip an isolated nest — and it concentrates spawning in the limited patches of good bottom near deep-water access. For anglers it means spawning crappie are clustered, not scattered: find one bed and you have found twenty, so work the area thoroughly before moving.
