Do I really have to figure-8 on every single cast?

Every cast, no exceptions — this is the one non-negotiable habit in muskie fishing. The reason is what you cannot see: in stained water or low light, a following fish is invisible until it eats, and surveys of boat-side strikes show a large share came from fish the angler never saw coming. The eight costs five seconds; skipping it silently deletes boat-side fish from your season. Do it properly even when "nothing is there": rod tip deep, wide oval turns, speed changes — a lazy swish beside the boat is not a figure-8, it is a superstition. The habit also keeps your bait in the water, and muskie are only ever caught with the bait in the water.
