Bucktails, rubber, gliders, topwater — when do I throw which?

Sort by water temperature and speed. Bucktails are the warm-water search tool — from about 15 °C (59 °F) up, burned over weeds and rocks, they cover the most water per hour and figure-8 better than anything. Topwater joins them on calm, warm, low-light evenings. As water cools through 13 °C (55 °F), slow down into gliders and jerkbaits, whose hang-and-dart action gives cooling fish time to commit. Big rubber is the all-year closer — fished fast and high in summer, crawled agonizingly slow in the 5–10 °C (41–50 °F) late fall when it becomes the primary. The meta-rule: speed of presentation tracks the fish's metabolic speed.
