How does a slip float work, and why is it the crappie rig?

A slip float slides freely on the line until a small bobber stop — set anywhere you choose — arrests it, so you can fish a jig at exactly 4.5 m (15 ft) yet still cast a compact, tangle-free rig. That solves the two defining crappie problems at once: the fish suspend at precise depths, and they bite upward, which a float shows instantly by popping up or lying flat. Set the stop so the bait rides at or just above the marks on your sonar, let wind drift do the retrieving, and adjust the stop, not your guess, as the school moves.
