Do walleye hit topwater lures?

Occasionally — enough to be a real thing, not enough to plan a trip around. The walleye is built to feed near bottom and in dim light, but it feeds upward readily, so a fish that is already shallow can and will take a bait off the surface. It happens on calm, warm nights when walleye push into 1–2 m (3–7 ft) over rock and sand to chase minnows against the surface, and during heavy mayfly hatches, when fish rise to emerging insects. A slow, steady surface bait that leaves a wake draws more hits than a loud popper. But the same fish will take a shallow minnowbait running just under the surface far more reliably, and hook up better too. Treat a topwater walleye as a bonus.
