Should I set the hook differently on a smallmouth?

Somewhat — the smallmouth's smaller, harder, more cartilage-and-bone mouth holds hooks well once buried but resists sloppy penetration, and the fish's jumping style throws poorly-set hooks. On finesse gear (drop shot, ned) with thin-wire hooks, skip the bass-TV cross: a firm sweep-and-reel set penetrates without tearing. On single heavy hooks (tubes, jigs) a solid rod-sweep set is right. Then manage the jumps: keep the rod low and to the side, maintain pressure, and give a controlled bow when the fish goes fully airborne.
