Why do I keep missing fish when I lift the jig?

Odds are the fish already had the bait, and your lift pulled it out. Crappie sip a jig at short range with modest suction and often just hold it, drifting upward — from your end there is no signal at all yet. When you then pop the rod to "impart action," you are yanking the jig out of a closed mouth. The fix: pause longer than feels natural, and before every lift, load the rod slowly for an inch first — if there is any weight or life on the line, sweep; if not, continue the lift as your next jigging stroke.
