Can you catch a muskie on a fly?

Yes, and a small, dedicated community does little else — but it takes the hardest fish in freshwater and makes it harder. The tackle is heavy: 10- to 12-weight rods, sinking or intermediate lines, a wire or heavy fluorocarbon bite tippet and flies of 20–35 cm (8–14 in) built from bucktail and synthetics that shed water for casting. The fly's advantage is real: it can hang, nearly weightless, and turn side-on during a pause, which a following muskie often cannot resist. Rivers and smaller, shallower lakes are the best venues. Every retrieve still ends in a figure-8, done with the rod tip deep in the water, and the hookset is a hard strip-set. Expect follows by the day and fish by the season.
