Beyond bucktails and big rubber: do spinnerbaits, lipless baits, spoons and jigs catch muskie?

Spinnerbaits certainly do. A large muskie spinnerbait is the single-hook, nearly weedless cousin of the bucktail: it comes through cabbage and reeds that foul trebles, can be slow-rolled down the deep weed edge or helicoptered into pockets, and works in cooler water than a burned bucktail. The rest are niches. Big lipless rattle baits ripped over new weeds take early-season fish. Weedless spoons reach fish in slop; casting spoons are old-school but still catch. A heavy jig with a long plastic tail, hopped down a weed edge, is a cold-front and spring tactic for neutral fish, and heavy vertical jigging baits are a regional late-fall method in big rivers. What does not exist is a small-bait game: walleye jigs and bass worms hook muskie only by accident — and get bitten off.
