Can you catch yellow perch on a fly rod?
Easily, when they are shallow. In spring, and along weed edges and docks through summer wherever perch hold in under 3 m (10 ft), a small weighted streamer or a bead-head nymph on a light rod — a 3- to 5-weight — catches them steadily. Let the fly sink to bottom, then move it in short, slow strips with pauses: perch feed nose-down near bottom and will not rise far. Set on any tick or hesitation, because the peck-and-spit bite is even harder to feel through a fly line. Once schools slide out to 6–12 m (20–40 ft), the fly rod is out of the game. It is a pleasant side fishery and a fine way to teach fly casting — not a way to fill a bucket.
