Can you catch crappie on a fly rod?
Yes, and in spring it is one of the easiest ways into warm-water fly fishing. When crappie move shallow to spawn around brush, reeds and dock posts, a small, lightly weighted streamer or soft-hackle wet fly on a 3- to 5-weight rod, counted down and retrieved in slow strips with long pauses, imitates the small minnows they eat. The fly's slow, level sink is exactly what an up-looking crappie wants. On calm, warm evenings fish dimple the surface for insects, and a tiny popper or foam bug takes them on top. Lift gently rather than strike — the mouth tears. The window is short: once the fish drop back to deep brush and open water, the jig and slip float take over again.
