Fishing the Shade (Shade fishing): Scenario-based execution: boat position, targets, actions, and adjustments
Sunny with a crisp shade edge: Enter from the bright side
Keep the boat where your own shadow won’t cover the target. First cast the jerkbait into the bright water ahead of the shade; as it reaches the edge, pause, then work short twitches along the edge. If fish are holding on the dark side, approaching from light to dark lets you observe the full reaction better than plopping it on their head.
If no contact, add another track deeper into the dark side rather than randomly pounding the same edge back and forth. If the shade is only a rod-width wide, slide the boat to make your retrieve run as parallel to the edge as possible.
Deep shade under bridges and docks: Leave slack on the fall
With an unweighted stickbait, land the bait at the farthest reachable point of the shade and manage controlled slack to let it fall naturally. As it sinks, pick up excess line in stages without pulling the bait toward the light; if the line stops early or moves sideways, check for a bite first.
If it’s deeper and the unweighted bait keeps washing out with current, carry a 1/16 oz nail weight and Neko rig to get a quicker fall in the same zone. After changing weight, re-calibrate the fall; don’t reuse the old wait time.
Clouds cover the sun: Where to go near the former boundary
When shade disappears, first check the nearest posts, laydowns, and contour breaks on the former dark side. Use a texposed stickbait placed tight to physical cover. The structure still exists while the light boundary doesn’t; fish may spread from a narrow line into a wider area.
If shallow activity pops off nearby, switch back to a jerkbait to widen the search; don’t fixate on the now-invisible shade line. When the sun returns, reestablish the boundary from outside to inside; don’t copy your morning boat line in the afternoon.

What to throw here
- Wacky and Neko Rigs — Let a worm fall inside the shade and watch the line before pulling it into sunlight.
- Skirted Jigs (Flipping, Casting, Football, Finesse, Swim) — Pitch tight to shaded wood with a clear route for landing the fish.
