Wacky and Neko Rigs

Soft stickbaits hooked through the body instead of the nose, producing a shimmying, horizontal-to-vertical fall that triggers finicky or pressured bass.

Also known as: Wacky and Neko Rigs · wacky worm family · stick worm rigs · center-hooked soft plastics

The rigs that catch bass when nothing else will — a straight worm doing almost nothing.

  • Hook through the middle (wacky) or nail-weight the head (Neko): both ends flutter on the fall
  • O-rings save baits; a weedguard hook saves the rig in wood
  • Fish it on slack line — the bite is a line jump, not a pull
  • Spinning gear, PE main line, fluoro leader: this is finesse

What unites this family is the hook placement: instead of running through the nose (Texas/Carolina style) or through a jighead collar, the hook goes through the middle of the bait, letting both ends kick independently on the fall and on the shake. That single change turns a plain stickbait into one of the subtlest, most triggering falls in bass fishing.

Within the family, the split is about weight placement and hook style. The classic wacky rig is weightless, hooked on a light wire O-ring hook, and built for shallow, visible targets — docks, laydowns, spawning flats — where a slow horizontal glide is the whole point. The neko rig adds a nail weight to the nose, standing the bait on its head and giving it a vertical, bottom-hugging personality suited to points, rock, and deeper structure where you need to feel bottom and control the fall rate. Both then branch into weedless versions once cover gets thick enough to need a guarded hook.

Reach for this family when bass are following baits without committing, when the bite window is short and precise (beds, dock shade lines, staging points), or when moving to a smaller, quieter profile is the only thing still getting bites after moving baits fail. The trade-off is control: weightless wacky rigs are hard to cast into wind and lose bottom contact in current or depth; neko rigs fix that but sacrifice some of the softness of the fall. Weedless hooks solve cover but cost hook-up percentage compared to open, light-wire hooks. Matching hook/weight to cover and depth — not the bait itself — is the real skill in this family.

Variants

  • Wacky rig — Weightless soft stickbait hooked through the middle so both ends flutter on a slow horizontal fall.
  • Neko rig — Nose-weighted stickbait hooked wacky-style so it stands vertically on the fall and on bottom, built for precise depth and structure contact.
  • Weedless wacky rig — A wacky-hooked stickbait rigged on a weed guard hook so it can be pitched into vegetation and wood without fouling.
  • Weedless neko rig — A nose-weighted neko rig on a weed-guarded hook, built to punch a vertical, headstanding stickbait through grass and wood.
