Fishing the Shade (Shade fishing): Real cases and complete tackle pairings

Real case: What happened and what to learn

A bait recap from the 2015 Hartwell Classic noted that one of Skeet Reese’s key patterns was shade lines on creek docks, but cloud cover on the last two days hurt that pattern.

Read original report.

The significance of shade is that it creates a repeatable boundary; not every dark spot holds fish. As the sun angle changes or clouds block the sun, the boundary moves or disappears; your boat position and casting approach must change with it. Water temperature, water color, and baitfish still decide whether the spot is worth a stop.

Rigs and full rod, reel, line pairings

Below are this site’s starting configurations for this chapter’s scenarios; these are not unsupported angler gear lists. Feet are used for depth and rod length, inches for bait length, lb is labeled line strength, oz is weight. 1 oz ≈ 28.35 g, 1 ft ≈ 30.5 cm. M, MH, H indicate medium, medium-heavy, and heavy power; fast action describes bend concentration, not a requirement to retrieve fast. A reel’s 7:1 is the gear ratio per handle turn; actual line pickup also depends on spool.

Shade-line horizontal search: 6 ft 10 in M casting, 6.3:1 reel, 12 lb fluoro, 90–110 mm shallow-diving jerkbait. Back side of shade: 7 ft M spinning, size 2500 reel, 15 lb braid to 10 lb fluoro leader, 5 in stickbait, 1/0 wacky hook with O-ring. Under branches, switch to 3/0 EWG unweighted with point texposed/skin-hooked to avoid dragging an exposed hook through wood.

Fishing the Shade (Shade fishing)

Under blazing sun, shade is structure: docks, tree shade, and bridge shade compress fish into narrow, castable lanes.
