Follow-up Baits: Real-world case and complete tackle pairing
Real case: What happened and what you can learn
Randy Howell listed a Senko as his follow-up after a missed topwater or spinnerbait bite in Bassmaster’s early-fall bait breakdown, and he used a 7-foot 2-inch MH Tatula spinning rod.
The target of a follow-up cast is the same fish that just reacted or that small group in the same area, and the first priority is preserving the contact location. The value of switching baits comes from changing fall, speed, or hook configuration—not from assuming the second bait is inherently more confidence-inspiring to the fish.
Complete rig with rod, reel, and line
Below is this site’s starting setup for the scenarios in this chapter; it is not an angler’s gear list lacking source support. Feet are used for depth and rod length, inches for bait length, lb is stated line test, oz is weight. 1 oz ≈ 28.35 g; 1 foot ≈ 30.5 cm. M, MH, H denote medium, medium-heavy, and heavy power; fast action describes where the rod bends, not a requirement to retrieve quickly. A reel’s 7:1 denotes gear ratio per handle turn; actual IPT also depends on spool size.
Primary rod: 7-foot MH moderate-action casting, 7:1 reel, 30 lb braid with nylon leader, 110 mm walking bait. Follow-up rod: 7-foot M/MH spinning, 2500–3000 reel, 15 lb braid to 10 lb fluoro, 5-inch stickbait, 1/0 wacky hook; in grass switch to 3/0 EWG weightless. Deep follow-up rod: same spinning system with 1/4 oz drop shot, size 1 hook, 4-inch straight tail.

Follow-up Baits
A missed blowup means the fish is located: immediately follow up on the same spot with a smaller, slower bait.
