Milfoil: Seasonal and conditional usage

Recalibrate bait depth after the grass tops out

In the same bay, early summer may allow deeper crosswise lines, but once the canopy rises in midsummer, the same bait will foul constantly. Re-measure the grass top first; don’t assume yesterday’s weight and speed still apply. With low light and active fish, check the top first; when the bite stalls, go to the holes.

In fall, start by comparing remaining upright grass, mixed species patches, and adjacent hard bottom; a big wind can move clippings and make a previously clean outside edge temporarily unusable. In cold water, tone down action, but if there’s no forage in the grass, don’t camp just because it’s still green.

Translate changing conditions into tackle

First establish a baseline with the Approach and Casts for this cover. Keep one casting line to compare your target layer to the next adjacent layer; after confirming fish level, then change only fall rate or soak time. Heavier doesn’t mean there are fish deeper, and slower won’t fix a bait that never passed the fish.
