Neko rig
Nose-weighted stickbait hooked wacky-style so it stands vertically on the fall and on bottom, built for precise depth and structure contact.
Also known as: Neko rig · Neko worm · nail-weight wacky rig · Japanese wacky rig · nose-weighted wacky
The rigs that catch bass when nothing else will — a straight worm doing almost nothing.
- Hook through the middle (wacky) or nail-weight the head (Neko): both ends flutter on the fall
- O-rings save baits; a weedguard hook saves the rig in wood
- Fish it on slack line — the bite is a line jump, not a pull
- Spinning gear, PE main line, fluoro leader: this is finesse
The neko rig takes the wacky hook placement and adds a nail weight (usually tungsten) into the nose of the bait. That single addition changes the whole personality of the rig: instead of falling flat and horizontal, the bait nose-dives and stands on its tail once it lands, with the unweighted tail continuing to quiver. It gives you the wacky rig's subtlety with the depth control and bottom feel that a pure weightless bait can't offer.
It shines on structure where you need to know exactly where the bait is — main lake points, humps, breaklines, rock piles, and dock pilings — and in any wind or current where a weightless wacky rig would blow around uncontrollably. Smallmouth relate to it especially well because of the vertical, headstanding profile it presents near bottom, but largemouth eat it just as readily around docks and staging areas. It is a go-to when fish have seen wacky rigs all summer and need a slightly different fall rate and angle to react.
It fails when fish want a horizontal, slow-glide presentation — the nose weight speeds and steepens the fall compared to a true wacky rig, which can be too much in ultra-clear, heavily pressured shallow water. It also fouls in grass and wood on a straight hook, requiring the weedless version once cover thickens.
Gear stays finesse: light-to-medium spinning rods, 6-10 lb fluorocarbon, and nail weights sized to depth and fall speed desired (1/16 oz for shallow finesse, up to 3/16 oz for deeper vertical work). Insert the weight straight into the nose with an awl or dedicated tool, then hook the bait wacky-style just behind the weight's balance point.
