Wacky rig
Weightless soft stickbait hooked through the middle so both ends flutter on a slow horizontal fall.
Also known as: Wacky rig · Senko rig · wacky Senko · O-ring wacky rig · wacky worm · center-hooked stickbait
The rigs that catch bass when nothing else will — a straight worm doing almost nothing.
- Hook through the middle (wacky) or nail-weight the head (Neko): both ends flutter on the fall
- O-rings save baits; a weedguard hook saves the rig in wood
- Fish it on slack line — the bite is a line jump, not a pull
- Spinning gear, PE main line, fluoro leader: this is finesse
The wacky rig is a soft stickbait (classically a Senko-style bait) hooked crosswise through the middle, usually with an O-ring to save the plastic from tearing. With no added weight, the bait falls slowly and horizontally, both ends kicking, and it can be shaken in place almost indefinitely without moving off the spot. That combination — slow fall, zero forward movement, subtle action — is what makes it a finesse staple for shallow, visible, or pressured targets.
It shines around isolated shallow cover: dock posts and shade lines, laydowns, single stumps, spawning beds, and grass edges in the top few feet of water. Skipped under docks it gets to fish that never see moving baits, and on beds it can be shaken in a bass's face until it reacts out of aggravation. It also excels for smallmouth suspended just off bottom over rock and gravel in clear lakes, fished on a slow deadstick.
It fails in wind, current, and depth. Being weightless, it is nearly impossible to keep in contact with bottom past about 8-10 feet, it blows around and loses feel in any wind, and it can't be power-fished — there's no way to cover water fast with it. Thick vegetation and wood also foul the open hook point unless rigged on a weed guard hook, which becomes the weedless wacky rig instead.
Gear is light and specific: a soft or moderate-fast spinning rod to protect light wire hooks and allow long, low skipping casts, 6-10 lb fluorocarbon or a light braid-to-fluoro leader for weightless casting distance, and a light wire wacky hook or O-ring tool. Keep hook size proportional to bait — oversized hooks kill the fall action that makes this rig work.
