Punch Rig: Gear notes
7'6"-8' (2.3-2.4 m) heavy or extra-heavy punching rod, 7.1:1-8.1:1 reel, 50-65 lb braid straight to the hook, snelled. Weight to the mat: 3/4 oz for thinning fall clumps, 1-1.5 oz for sun-baked summer canopy. Pegging is not optional — an unpegged weight separates in the mat and leaves the bait hung above the fish. Set the hook hard and keep the rod loaded; give a fish slack under a mat and it is gone.
