Spinnerbait
A wire safety-pin bait that pairs a lead head/skirt with one or more spinning blades for flash, vibration, and lift — the classic reaction/search tool for stained-to-dirty water and shallow cover.
Also known as: Spinnerbait · spinner bait · safety-pin bait · spinner
Flash and thump through anything: the spinnerbait is the original search bait.
- Willow for flash and speed, Colorado for thump and slow rolling
- Wind, stain, wood: when visibility drops, the spinnerbait rises
- Slow-roll deep, burn shallow, wake it on top
- Trailer hook for short strikes
Every spinnerbait shares the same bones: a bent-wire frame with a lead head and skirted hook on one arm and a swiveling blade (or blades) on the other. That geometry does two things nothing else in the box does as well — it lets you burn a bait through wood, grass, and rock with the hook riding up and mostly shielded, and it lets a single retrieve put out both flash and thump that bass can find by feel in dirty water as well as by sight in clear water.
Reach for a spinnerbait when you need to cover shallow-to-mid-depth water fast to find active or reaction-biting fish: wind-blown banks, stained run-off, grass lines, riprap, laydowns, points. It is a search bait first and a precision bait second — great for locating a school or a mood, then you can slow down with a jig or worm once you know where they are.
The big trade-off is blade choice versus everything else. Willow blades spin tight and fast, throw more flash than thump, and slip through grass cleanly — best in clear water and warmer temps. Colorado blades turn slow and wide, push the most water and thump, and shine in muddy or cold water where fish need to feel the bait. Indiana and mixed tandem combos split the difference. Wind, retrieve speed, line diameter, and blade size all change how much lift and vibration the bait actually puts out at a given depth, so the same spinnerbait fishes differently on a calm bluebird day than it does on a windy, muddy one. Weedguards are usually light or absent, so it is not a true flip-and-punch bait for the thickest cover — that job belongs to the jig and Texas rig.

Variants
- Colorado-blade spinnerbait — Round, cupped blade(s) that spin slow and wide for maximum thump — the muddy-water and cold-water bait.
- Tandem willow-blade spinnerbait — Two willow blades for maximum flash and a slim profile that slides through grass — the default all-around spinnerbait.
- Indiana-blade spinnerbait — A blade shape between Colorado and willow — moderate flash and moderate thump for an honest, all-conditions middle ground.
- Colorado-willow combo spinnerbait — A Colorado front blade paired with a willow trailing blade — thump up front, flash and lift behind, a versatile go-to search bait.
