Colorado-willow combo spinnerbait

A Colorado front blade paired with a willow trailing blade — thump up front, flash and lift behind, a versatile go-to search bait.

Also known as: Colorado-willow combo spinnerbait · Colorado-willow spinnerbait · combo blade spinnerbait · mixed blade spinnerbait

Flash and thump through anything: the spinnerbait is the original search bait.

  • Willow for flash and speed, Colorado for thump and slow rolling
  • Wind, stain, wood: when visibility drops, the spinnerbait rises
  • Slow-roll deep, burn shallow, wake it on top
  • Trailer hook for short strikes

This tandem combo puts a smaller Colorado blade near the head and a longer willow blade trailing behind it, stacking the wide thump of the Colorado with the flash and lift of the willow on a single wire. It is arguably the most common tandem configuration sold and thrown because it hedges between the two blade extremes without the mushy middle-ground feel of an Indiana blade — anglers get a distinct thump they can feel and a distinct flash they can see in the same retrieve.

It earns a spot as a genuine confidence/search bait: stained water with moderate current, wind-blown banks in spring and fall, transitional cover where you're not sure if fish want subtlety or noise. It handles a slightly wider range of retrieve speeds than a pure Colorado bait (thanks to the willow's lower resistance) while still pushing more water than a pure tandem willow, so it tolerates both a moderate swim and a faster burn reasonably well.

It is not the specialist's choice at either extreme — a dedicated willow bait will out-fish it in gin-clear water on a fast retrieve, and a dedicated big Colorado will out-thump it in true mud — but as a first bait tied on when starting a day of unknown conditions, it is hard to beat. Standard gear applies: 7'–7'6" medium-heavy fast rod, 15-17 lb fluorocarbon, stepping up to braid in matted cover. The typical mistake is under-committing to blade size for the conditions — go bigger Colorado for cooler/dirtier water and lean on the willow's flash by speeding up in clear water, rather than fishing one static retrieve regardless of conditions.
