Indiana-blade spinnerbait

A blade shape between Colorado and willow — moderate flash and moderate thump for an honest, all-conditions middle ground.

Also known as: Indiana-blade spinnerbait · Indiana spinnerbait · hybrid-blade spinnerbait

Flash and thump through anything: the spinnerbait is the original search bait.

  • Willow for flash and speed, Colorado for thump and slow rolling
  • Wind, stain, wood: when visibility drops, the spinnerbait rises
  • Slow-roll deep, burn shallow, wake it on top
  • Trailer hook for short strikes

Indiana blades are shaped between a Colorado's round cup and a willow's narrow taper — an oval that spins faster than a Colorado but pushes more water than a willow. The result is a spinnerbait that gives up a little maximum flash and a little maximum thump in exchange for being usable across a wider range of conditions without needing a rig change. It is the bait many guides keep tied on as a 'confidence' option when they genuinely don't know if fish want subtlety or noise, or when clarity is truly in-between — moderately stained water that isn't clear enough for willow and isn't muddy enough for Colorado.

Its weakness is that it rarely wins a head-to-head test on its own turf; a dedicated willow bait out-flashes it in clear water and a dedicated Colorado out-thumps it in mud. It earns its place as the bait for transitional water and transitional seasons — early spring flats warming unevenly, stained rivers with mixed current, pressured lakes where a slightly different profile draws extra looks. It is also popular as a compact, downsized bait for pitching to shallow cover because the moderate blade size keeps the whole package small without sacrificing thump.

Gear stays middle-of-the-road too: a 7' medium-heavy, fast rod with 15-17 lb fluorocarbon covers most Indiana-blade work, dropping to lighter line and a smaller compact size for skipping under docks. The main mistake anglers make is treating it as a willow substitute and burning it — an Indiana blade wants a moderate, steady swim to load correctly, not a fast wake.
