Crankbaits (squarebill, medium-diving, deep-diving)

Hard-bodied, treble-hooked search baits that cover water and deflect off cover or grind bottom to trigger reaction strikes.

Also known as: Crankbaits (squarebill, medium-diving, deep-diving, lipless) · crankbait · cranking · crank · diving bait · square bill · deep diver · lipless

Cover water and bump cover: the crankbait finds active bass faster than anything else.

  • Bill length = depth: squarebill shallow, medium-diver 8-12 ft, deep-diver 15-20 ft
  • Deflection triggers strikes — hit the rock, the stump, the grass edge
  • Moderate-action rod and fluorocarbon: let the fish load the rod
  • Match the depth to the fish, not the bait to the box

Crankbaits are covering baits. Every variant in this family shares the same job: swim fast, hunt bottom or cover, and make contact — deflection and erratic movement off wood, rock, or grass is what actually pulls the strike, not just the wobble. What separates the variants is depth range and bill design: squarebills run 0-6 feet and are built to bounce off shallow wood and rock; medium divers run 6-12 feet for points, humps, and staging areas; deep divers reach 12-20+ feet for offshore ledges and summer/fall schooling fish; lipless crankbaits have no bill at all and instead vibrate through grass and open water at any depth in the column, making them the most versatile searching tool of the four.

Reach for this family when bass are actively feeding and willing to chase — pre-spawn warming flats, summer offshore schools, fall baitfish migrations. They are reaction baits first, so they lose ground to slower presentations (jigs, worms) once fish get pressured or the front passes and the bite turns neutral or negative. The universal trade-off is speed versus control: crankbaits cover water fast and trigger reaction bites other baits can't, but they can't be finessed, can't be left in one spot, and telegraph less about individual fish behavior than a dragged or shaken bait.

Gear scales with depth. Shallow squarebill work is done on moderate-action rods that keep hooks pinned during short-range deflections; deep cranking demands longer casts, thinner lines to maximize depth, and glass or composite rods that let big-mouthed fish load up before the hookset. Across all four, contact with something — rock, wood, grass, or bottom — is what separates a good crankbait retrieve from a wasted one.

Variants

  • Squarebill Crankbait — Shallow-running, wide-wobble crankbait built to deflect off wood, rock, and grass in 0-6 feet of water.
  • Medium-Diving Crankbait — 6-12 foot diving crankbait for points, humps, and staging structure between shallow cover and deep ledges.
  • Deep-Diving Crankbait — Long-billed crankbait built to reach 12-20+ feet, the standard tool for grinding offshore ledges and channel breaks.
