Deep-Diving Crankbait
Long-billed crankbait built to reach 12-20+ feet, the standard tool for grinding offshore ledges and channel breaks.
Also known as: Deep-Diving Crankbait · DD crank · deep diver · offshore crank · ledge crank · big crank
Cover water and bump cover: the crankbait finds active bass faster than anything else.
- Bill length = depth: squarebill shallow, medium-diver 8-12 ft, deep-diver 15-20 ft
- Deflection triggers strikes — hit the rock, the stump, the grass edge
- Moderate-action rod and fluorocarbon: let the fish load the rod
- Match the depth to the fish, not the bait to the box
The deep diver has the longest, most aggressively angled bill in the family, built specifically to reach 12-20+ feet on a long cast. It's the standard bait for offshore ledge fishing on reservoirs and river systems, where bass stack on channel breaks, humps, and bars well away from the bank.
What separates it from a medium diver isn't just depth — it's the entire approach. Deep cranking is a structure-fishing discipline: long casts, precise boat positioning, and grinding contact with a specific piece of bottom (a stump, a rock pile, a hard-to-soft transition) rather than general area coverage. The bait's job is to bury into that structure and deflect, not just swim through open water.
It shines in summer and fall when bass group tightly on offshore structure in mid-depth to deep water, especially on river-run reservoirs with well-defined channel ledges. It struggles in true shallow water, where it simply dives too deep to be useful, and around heavy shallow cover, where its long bill and treble spread hang constantly. It also loses effectiveness in cold water once fish stop chasing a fast-moving bait, ceding ground to a jig or worm.
Gear is specialized: long, moderate-to-glass-action rods that load progressively to help cast distance and keep hooks pinned on a fish that's often far from the boat, paired with thin-diameter fluorocarbon (10-12lb) to maximize running depth. Many dedicated deep-crankers use rods a foot or more longer than typical bass rods purely for the extra casting distance needed to get baits to full depth before they reach the target structure.
