Medium-Diving Crankbait
6-12 foot diving crankbait for points, humps, and staging structure between shallow cover and deep ledges.
Also known as: Medium-Diving Crankbait · mid-diver · mid-range crank · 6 foot crank · point crank
Cover water and bump cover: the crankbait finds active bass faster than anything else.
- Bill length = depth: squarebill shallow, medium-diver 8-12 ft, deep-diver 15-20 ft
- Deflection triggers strikes — hit the rock, the stump, the grass edge
- Moderate-action rod and fluorocarbon: let the fish load the rod
- Match the depth to the fish, not the bait to the box
The medium diver bridges the gap between shallow squarebill water and true offshore deep cranking. Its bill is longer and more angled than a squarebill's, letting it reach 6-12 feet on a standard cast, and it's the standard tool for working secondary points, humps, and staging areas where bass hold between the bank and deep structure.
What sets it apart is versatility of application: it's shallow enough to be fished with confidence around scattered rock and stumps, but deep enough to cover the classic staging depths bass use during pre-spawn migration and summer schooling. It doesn't excel at either extreme — a squarebill out-fishes it tight to cover, and a true deep diver out-fishes it on ledges past 12 feet — but on the mid-depth structure in between, it's often the only bait in the box built for the zone.
It shines during pre-spawn staging on points and during summer and early fall when smallmouth and largemouth school over humps and rock piles in that 6-12 foot band. It struggles in heavy shallow cover, where its longer bill hangs up more than a squarebill's, and in true offshore water past 12-15 feet, where it simply can't reach bottom.
Standard gear is a medium-heavy rod with a moderate-to-fast tip, similar to squarebill gear but often matched with slightly lighter line — 10-12lb fluorocarbon — to help the bait reach its rated depth. Many anglers carry both a shallow squarebill and a medium diver rigged simultaneously to cover a full point from bank to break without re-tying.
