Japanese vs US specs
How much thinner Japanese PE is, how much farther it casts, and at equal real strength.
At the same printed lb, Japanese PE is about 25% thinner than US braid (about 45% less cross-section) → casts roughly 8–20% farther, about 5–10 m (16–33 ft) more on a 50–65 m (160–215 ft) cast. At equal measured strength, Japanese lines are still about 8–22% thinner below 30 lb, and level from 30 to 56 lb. The biggest difference is the label: US braid really breaks at about twice its printed lb.
By measured break: same real strength, what the label says and how thick it is (Line Laboratory tests, 58 Japanese and 42 US lines, medians)
| Measured break | Japanese label | US label | Japanese measured diameter | US measured diameter | US thicker by |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12–17 lb | 16 lb | 8 lb | 0.176 mm | 0.214 mm | +22% |
| 18–23 lb | 20.4 lb | 12 lb | 0.204 mm | 0.220 mm | +8% |
| 24–29 lb | 25 lb | 15 lb | 0.236 mm | 0.287 mm | +22% |
| 30–36 lb | 35.5 lb | 15 lb | 0.278 mm | 0.272 mm | −2% |
| 37–45 lb | 45 lb | 30 lb | 0.292 mm | 0.307 mm | +5% |
| 46–56 lb | 58 lb | 30 lb | 0.350 mm | 0.343 mm | −2% |
Example: lines that all broke at 25–29 lb
| Line | Japanese / US | Measured break | Label | Measured diameter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Daiwa UVF Durasensor ×12 PE1.5 | Japanese | 25.5 lb | 31 lb | 0.220 mm |
| Toray Power Game PE1.5 | Japanese | 25.8 lb | 20 lb | 0.231 mm |
| YGK X-Braid Upgrade X8 PE1.5 | Japanese | 27.4 lb | 30 lb | 0.230 mm |
| Varivas 8 PE1.5 | Japanese | 27.7 lb | 31 lb | 0.232 mm |
| Daiwa J-Braid Grand | US | 25.1 lb | 10 lb | 0.252 mm |
| PowerPro Original | US | 25.9 lb | 15 lb | 0.315 mm |
| Sufix 131 G-Core | US | 26.4 lb | 10 lb | 0.243 mm |
| KastKing Silky8 | US | 28.0 lb | 15 lb | 0.291 mm |
| Daiwa J-Braid x4 | US | 28.8 lb | 15 lb | 0.265 mm |
| Berkley x9 | US | 29.4 lb | 15 lb | 0.306 mm |
Real strength about 25–29 lb: Japanese labels say 20–31 lb, US labels only 10–15 lb; measured diameters 0.22–0.23 mm Japanese vs 0.24–0.32 mm US (5–37% thicker). Conversion: a US line printed X lb ≈ a Japanese line printed 1.5–2.4 × X (US 15 lb ≈ PE 1.2–2).
Same printed strength: how far apart are the diameters? (manufacturer specs)
| Rating | Japanese PE | US braid | Thinner (diameter) | Less cross-section |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| About 15–16 lb | PE 0.8 · 0.153 mm (YGK X8) | PowerPro 0.18 / J-Braid 0.19 / Sufix 832 0.22 mm | 15% / 19% / 30% | 28% / 35% / 52% |
| About 20 lb | PE 1.0 · 0.171 mm (YGK X8) | PowerPro, J-Braid, Sufix 832 0.23 mm; Spiderwire Stealth 0.25 mm | 26%; 32% | 45%; 53% |
| About 30 lb | PE 1.5 · 0.21 mm (YGK X8) | PowerPro, J-Braid 0.28 / Sufix 832 0.29 mm | 25% / 28% | 44% / 48% |
How much farther does thinner go? Casting tests that change only the diameter
| Test | Lines (how much thinner) | Lure and gear | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salt Strong | PowerPro 10 lb vs 20 lb (35% thinner) | 5 g (3/16 oz) · spinning | 40 m vs 31 m (130 vs 103 ft): 26% farther |
| Salt Strong | Same | 14 g (1/2 oz) · spinning | 65 m vs 54 m (212 vs 176 ft): 20% farther |
| Tsuripo | Same brand PE 0.8 vs 1.5 (about 27% thinner) | 12 cm hard bait · 9.8 ft rod · 3000 spinning | 52 m vs 42 m: 24% farther |
| webs.coffee | PE 1.5 vs PE 3 (29% thinner) | 13 g · baitcaster | 63.3 m vs 58.2 m: 8.7% farther |
| webs.coffee | Same | 30 g · baitcaster | 101.9 m vs 92.1 m: 10.6% farther |
Rule of thumb: 25–35% thinner → about 20–26% farther with light lures on spinning; about 9–11% with 13–30 g on a baitcaster. Applied to the 20 lb label gap (26% thinner): about 8–20% farther (an estimate; no direct Japanese-vs-US test exists).
- Labels: the median of measured ÷ printed is 0.94 for Japanese lines (label ≈ real) and 1.93 for US lines (real strength about twice the label, sometimes more: Berkley Forward printed 8 lb broke at 21.6 lb).
- Strength per measured cross-section: median 561 lb/mm² Japanese vs 530 US, about 6% in Japan's favour on average, but both sides have the thinnest and the thickest lines.
- Thinnest for their real strength: Japanese Varivas (8, High Grade), YGK Upgrade, Seaguar R18, Daiwa Saltiga / UVF; US Sufix 832, Yo-Zuri SuperBraid, Berkley Super Fireline, PowerPro Maxcuatro.
- Thicker for their real strength: PowerPro Original / Super Slick, SpiderWire Dura-Silk, Sufix NanoBraid, KastKing Silky8, Berkley x9; some Japanese too, such as Varivas Avani Shore Master and Gosen Answer Jigging.
- So for thin line, choose by measured diameter and measured strength, brand and model, not by country. An under-filled spool or guide layout costs about as much distance as one line size.
- Test conditions: one spool per line, peak break; diameters by microscope on unsqueezed line read above the printed figure for every brand, and flat braids read thicker.
