Material
Material quality (consistency at a price)Strong — Often lists PE number and approximate diameter: easy to compareFair — Cost-first; yarn and coating vary widelyFair — Blend or weighted coating is rarely statedStrong — One fused construction, few brands (FireLine)Weak — Sold by lb and "mono-equivalent" diameter; yarn and coating unstatedStrong — Little difference between brands: buy the cheap spoolFair — Formulas vary; budget spools are inconsistentFair — An "upgrade" label is not one formulaStrong — Check it says 100% fluorocarbonStrong — Check it says 100% fluorocarbonFair — Niche category, few models
Thinner for the same strengthStrong — PE #1 ≈ 20 lb at ~0.171 mm (VARIVAS example)Strong — PE fibre: far thinner than mono at equal strengthFair — Coating or blend adds diameter at the same PE numberStrong — PE fibre, rated in lbFair — 20 lb 832 = 0.229 mm (0.009″); thick coatingWeak — 30 lb Dacron ≈ the diameter of 20 lb nylonWeak — 20 lb Sufix Elite = 0.457 mm (0.018″)Weak — Monofilament: far thicker than PEWeak — 20 lb Advance FC = 0.432 mm (0.017″)Weak — Monofilament: far thicker than PEWeak — Monofilament: far thicker than PE
FloatsStrong — PE specific gravity ≈ 0.97, lighter than fresh waterStrong — PE specific gravity ≈ 0.97Hardly ever — Built to sinkStrong — PE specific gravity ≈ 0.97Strong — PE specific gravity ≈ 0.97Hardly ever — Polyester ≈ 1.38: sinksFair — ≈ 1.14; rides the surface film for a whileWeak — Near neutralHardly ever — Specific gravity 1.78: sinks fastHardly ever — Specific gravity 1.78: sinks fastHardly ever — Polyester ≈ 1.38: sinks
SinksHardly ever — FloatsHardly ever — FloatsFair — Only slightly heavier than water: sinks slowly, cuts the wind bowHardly ever — Floats; denser than braid but does not truly sinkHardly ever — Floats; the coating is for handling, not densityFair — ≈ 1.38: sinks, but thickWeak — Sinks slowlyWeak — Near neutralStrong — 1.78: fastestStrong — 1.78: fastestFair — ≈ 1.38: sinks
Water resistance (no uptake, little carried water)Fair — Fibre absorbs almost nothing; the weave holds waterFair — Fibre absorbs almost nothing; coarse weave holds waterFair — As braid; more carried water once the coating wearsFair — No weave gaps, but carries water into guides in hard frostFair — Little carried water while the coating lastsWeak — Weave holds water: swells on the spool, mildews if stored wetWeak — The polymer absorbs water; wet properties changeWeak — Still a nylon; check the productStrong — Absorbs almost no waterStrong — Absorbs almost no waterStrong — Polyester mono: very low uptake
Casting
Quiet through the guidesStrong — Round and smooth: quiet in the guidesWeak — Textured surface: hums in the guidesFair — x8 build, but a grippier coatingStrong — No braid textureFair — Quiet while coated, louder once worn— — Not a casting lineStrong — Smooth monofilamentStrong — Smooth monofilamentStrong — Smooth monofilamentStrong — Smooth monofilamentStrong — Smooth monofilament
Smooth line flowStrong — Round and slick: clean payoutWeak — Coarse: poor payout with light luresFair — Slick, but the coating stiffens itFair — Stiff and flat; less supple than x8Fair — Smooth while coated, rough once wornWeak — Thick, soft and draggyStrong — Supple: flows easilyStrong — Supple: flows easilyFair — Fairly supple, still stiffer than nylonWeak — Stiff, with memoryFair — Stiffish; manage slack
Casting distance (light lures)Strong — Best for long casts with 3–7 g luresWeak — Clearly worse with 3–7 g luresFair — Bought for line control at range; casts well enoughFair — Clean with light lures; worse with a leader knotFair — Thicker per lb: average with light luresHardly ever — Not a casting main lineFair — Thicker, but suppleFair — Thicker, but suppleFair — Thicker and heavierWeak — Stiff: high payout dragFair — Made for fine sizes and tiny lures
Resists wind knots (low memory)Fair — Loops if filled to the lip; leave 1–2 mmStrong — Firmer; beds on itselfFair — Slick and coated: throws loopsStrong — Stiff: very few wind knotsStrong — Very manageable while coatedFair — Soft, no memoryFair — Has memory; takes a setFair — Has memoryFair — Has memory; manage slack on spinningWeak — A full spinning spool coils like a springWeak — Stiff with memory: tangles easily
Durability
Abrasion (rock, shell)Weak — 20 lb braid kept 1.05 lb after 3 light sanding passesWeak — "Fewer carriers wear better" is unproven on rockWeak — A sinking line lies on the shellWeak — Damage splits white and fuzzy; strength goes thereWeak — The coating is not armourWeak — Polyester is no armour eitherFair — 6 lb nylon kept 4.5 lb in the same testFair — Product-specificFair — A common contact section; compare productsStrong — Chosen for an abrasion-resistant contact sectionWeak — Fine and easily scuffed
Cover-friendly (weeds, timber)Fair — Fine in weeds; add a contact section on rockStrong — Punching, frogs and flipping, tied directWeak — Drapes over structure and shellWeak — Dislikes coverStrong — 30 lb+ tied direct for reaction baitsWeak — Not a cover lineFair — Forgiving, but lets fish into weedsFair — Product-specificFair — The lighter end of cover leadersStrong — First choice for cover leadersHardly ever — Not suited
Feel & stealth
Sensitivity (seeing and feeling bites)Strong — Near-zero stretch, and it floats where you can see itStrong — Near-zero stretch: reads the bottomStrong — Transmits well, but no visual line watchingStrong — Stiff line carries light bitesStrong — Near-zero stretchWeak — Stretchy, little feedbackWeak — High stretchWeak — High stretchFair — Stretches, but more direct than nylonFair — Stretches, but more direct than nylonStrong — Low stretch: light bites read clearly
Stretch (shock absorption)Weak — Near zero: the rod tip and drag do the cushioningWeak — Near zeroWeak — Near zeroWeak — Near zeroWeak — Near zeroFair — Usable stretch: keeps trolled trebles pinnedStrong — Most stretchStrong — High stretchFair — Stretches under loadFair — Stretches under loadWeak — Low stretch
Stealth (to fish)Weak — Opaque: relies on the leaderWeak — Opaque, often tied directWeak — Dark and opaqueWeak — "Crystal" is pale, not clearWeak — OpaqueWeak — OpaqueFair — Clear or tintedFair — Clear or tintedStrong — Clear; the usual leaderStrong — Clear; the usual leaderFair — Clear monofilament
Knot-friendly (knot strength)Fair — Slick: FG to the leader, wet and seat slowlyFair — A dry, fast Palomar slips on coated braidFair — Slicker: add two or three wraps to the FGWeak — FG will not grip: use a double uni or AlbertoFair — FG seats well on thicker coated braidStrong — Does not slip: clinch and uni seat properlyStrong — Knots easilyStrong — Knots easilyFair — Wet and seat slowly; inspect the knotFair — Avoid sharp kinksWeak — Weak at the knot
Fishing
Small-lure friendlyStrong — 3–7 g rigs rely on its round surfaceWeak — Poor with light luresStrong — Deep finesse at PE 0.5–0.8Strong — Perch, crappie and ice jigsWeak — Rarely made below 10 lbHardly ever — Not used for thisFair — Supple, but thickFair — Supple, but thickStrong — Keeps tiny lures moving naturallyWeak — Can deaden tiny luresStrong — Made for tiny lures at 0.2–0.6 gou
Big-lure friendlyFair — PE 2–3 for big swimbaits and glidesStrong — PE 3–8Weak — The market stops at PE 2.5Hardly ever — Not made above 30 lbStrong — 30–80 lbFair — Trolling big hard baits only (50–80 lb)Fair — Stretch keeps trebles pinnedFair — Product-specificWeak — 4–16 lb: a finesse rangeStrong — 12–30 lbHardly ever — 1–4 lb
Bite-friendly (colour, stiffness, stretch, sensitivity, stealth)Fair — Sensitive and supple, but opaque: needs a leaderWeak — Thick and opaque, tied directFair — Sensitive, but dark and opaqueFair — Sensitive, but stiff and opaqueWeak — Thick and opaqueWeak — Thick, opaque, no feedbackFair — Soft and forgiving, but low sensitivityFair — Soft and forgivingStrong — Clear, supple, some stretchFair — Clear, but stiffFair — Sensitive and clear, but little cushion
Finesse-rig friendlyStrong — Drop shot, Ned, Neko and wacky with an FC leaderHardly ever — Not suitedStrong — Drop shot and hover rigs in windFair — Ice and light spinning for perch and crappieWeak — Rarely made in fine sizesHardly ever — Not suitedFair — Workable; thick and stretchyFair — WorkableStrong — Soft FC keeps the actionWeak — On the stiff sideStrong — Japanese light-lure fine line
Power-rig friendly (heavy cover, big fish)Fair — PE 3–8 for pike and muskie with a bite leaderStrong — Frogs, punching, flippingWeak — Tops out at PE 2.5Hardly ever — Not madeStrong — 50–80 lb for flipping and matsWeak — Backing and trolling onlyWeak — Stretchy and thickFair — Product-specificWeak — Finesse ratingsStrong — Cover leadersHardly ever — Not suited
Cost
Price-friendlyFair — Mid-pricedStrong — Cheap per metreWeak — Most expensive per metre; the coating wears fastFair — Fair in the light ratingsStrong — 300 yd (275 m) spools fill two reelsStrong — CheapStrong — CheapestFair — A little above plain nylonFair — Mid-pricedWeak — PricierFair — Mid-priced

PE wins on thinness, sensitivity and cost per strength; fluorocarbon and nylon win on stealth, stretch and knots. That is why most spinning setups are PE plus a leader.

Levels compare line types, not brands: one product can sit a level higher or lower. Diameter figures are manufacturer labels, not measured break loads.
