Ester line (polyester monofilament)
Polyester monofilament differs from polyester braid. A universal 5–8% elongation specification is unsupported.
The line is the only thing between you and the fish: stretch, diameter, visibility and abrasion decide the bite and the landing.
- PE main line for sensitivity and casting; fluorocarbon leader for stealth and abrasion
- Nylon stretches like a rubber band — topwater only, never finesse
- PE size is a diameter label, not a strength: the same PE 1.0 tests 10-25 lb by fibre grade
- US "20 lb" often breaks at 25; a PE label is tight
- Subtype distinctions — Polyester monofilament differs from polyester braid. A universal 5–8% elongation specification is unsupported.
- Scope — This category covers ester polyester monofilament. Polyester braid is grouped under braided lines because construction changes its role. Only one subtype is currently…
- Diameter and use — Ester is a specialized option in some ultralight systems, not a universal smallmouth upgrade. Thin line needs compatible spool management, knots, rod and drag. Material…
- Water and current — Polyester is denser than water, but sinking behaviour also depends on diameter, current and treatment. Visible colours help track fine line. A clear leader and its…
- Rigs and limits — Consider manufacturer-supported micro-jig applications. Larger bass, heavy cover and abrupt loads require demonstrated margin. Do not prescribe ester to every rig below…
- Selection and care — Compare working strain, knot reliability and shock performance. Keep appropriate cushioning and inspect damage. PE with a leader remains an alternative when evidence is…
