Why do largemouth follow my lure and then refuse it?

A follow means the lateral line and eyes were sold from a distance, but the close-up inspection failed — the fish saw too much. Largemouth telegraph refusal subtly: dropping back, angling downward, pectorals slowly flaring as it hovers behind the bait. The counter is to change what it is inspecting before it finishes deciding: snap the rod for a sudden speed change or direction break, kill the bait dead, or come back with a smaller, quieter profile on the next cast.
