Why am I getting short strikes that only nip the tail?

A short strike is weak suction from a half-committed fish: it flared at the bait from too far away or with too little conviction, and only the tail entered the suction field. That is a mood report — conditions (front, pressure, clarity) have the fish tracking but not committing. Fixes that work: downsize or shorten the bait so more of it rides in the suction zone, slow down and add pauses so the fish gets closer before firing, or add a trailer hook on moving baits.
