I missed a strike — will the pike come back?

Often, yes — pike are far more forgiving of a botched encounter than bass or muskie, especially early season and in cold water when meals are precious. Throw straight back to the same spot first; a fired-up pike frequently hits again within a cast or two. If that fails, change the look — smaller, slower, or a soft bait you can dead-stick where the strike happened — and if the spot goes quiet, note it and return in twenty to thirty minutes. An aggressive pike's memory of a missed meal is short; its attachment to a good ambush site is not.
